NGC 1499

NGC 1499, commonly called the California Nebula, is a vast cloud of glowing hydrogen and is the classic example of an emission nebula. It is very large spanning 2.5 degrees of sky but it's surface brightness is so low that it cannot be seen by the naked eye unless viewing conditions are ideal.
