Bubble Nebula and M52

Located in the constellation Cassiopeia the Bubble Nebula (ngc 7635) looks down on star cluster M52.  This enchanting bubble is actually one of three shells of gas surrounding a massive central star.  This shell is the result of a powerful flow of gas - known as stellar wind - generated by this star (SAO 20575).  This star is between 10 and 20 times the mass of our sun  and the pressure created by this stellar wind forces the surrounding interstellar material outwards into this bubble-like form.  M52 was discovered by Charles Messier, who catalogued it on September 7, 1774.
